Matched betting, explained
Matched betting turns bookmakers' free-bet offers into a near-fixed amount by covering every bet at a betting exchange. The profit comes from the offer, not from predicting results. It complements value betting: offers give a steadier start while a betting edge builds slowly over hundreds of bets.
Lay stake calculator
If the bookmaker bet wins: −£0.45. If the exchange lay wins: −£0.45.
How one offer works
- Place a qualifying bet
The bookmaker offers a free bet if you bet first, say £10. You back a selection at the bookmaker and, at the same moment, lay the same selection at a betting exchange (betting that it won't happen). Using the calculator, a £10 bet at 3.0 laid at 3.1 costs about £0.45 whichever way the match goes.
- Receive the free bet
Once the qualifying bet settles, the bookmaker credits the free bet. Read the terms: minimum odds, which markets count, expiry dates and payment-method exclusions.
- Use the free bet the same way
Back with the free bet and lay at the exchange. Because a free bet's stake isn't returned, higher odds keep more of its value. A £10 free bet at 5.0 laid at 5.2 returns about £7.57 either way (75.7%).
- Bank the difference
In this example the whole offer nets about £7.12: the free-bet value minus the small qualifying loss. The outcome of the match no longer matters.
Examples use 2% exchange commission. Real odds, commission and offers vary; always run your own numbers.
Before you start
- You need an account with a betting exchange and enough money there to cover each bet's liability.
- Place the lay bet straight after the back bet, before the odds move, and double-check the selection and stake.
- It still counts as gambling. If you use GamStop or have set limits for a reason, matched betting isn't for you.
- Bookmakers may limit accounts that only take offers.
Questions
Is matched betting legal in the UK?
Yes. It uses offers the bookmakers advertise and betting exchanges that are licensed to operate in the UK.
Do I pay tax on matched betting profits?
For customers in the UK, gambling winnings are not taxed, according to the Gambling Commission. This is general information, not tax advice.
Can I lose money?
Yes, through mistakes: laying the wrong selection, mistyped stakes, odds moving between placing the two bets, or missing an offer’s terms. Check every bet before you confirm it, and keep enough in your exchange account to cover the liability.
Will bookmakers restrict my account?
They may. Bookmakers can limit or stop offers on accounts that only take promotions. That is their right under their terms.
